How to support small businesses this holiday season using social media

It's no secret that COVID-19 has tested practically every business in 2020. With small businesses facing especially tough times, it is estimated that between 25-36% of small businesses in the USA could close for good as a result of COVID (Sprout Social). This holiday season will be a major test, and for many, it will determine if they can stay afloat or go under for good. The good news is that the majority of customers are aware of the dire situation and are eager to help. In fact, a study done by ZypMedia found that well over 80% of consumers based in the USA want to support their local community and businesses (PR Newswire).

If you're a consumer looking to help, check out these four ways you can support small businesses using social media this holiday season, all from the comfort of your own home!

1. Leave a Review

Online reviews are incredibly valuable for any business. They can give future customers the confidence to purchase an item or even give them a new place to try out. Additionally, they can also help a business's ranking on Google or Yelp. So, the next time you order delivery or try out a new seasonal product, take 5 minutes to leave a review and share it on your social media. This will not only expand the reach of your review, but it will put it front and center on your friends and family's newsfeed!

2. Form Partnerships

Partnering with like-minded businesses is a great way to boost exposure and send potential customers to your favorite businesses. You can run giveaways, host virtual events, and share new marketing ideas with each other, all while getting your products in front of a potentially new audience. It's a win-win.

3. Practice Patience

Many businesses have had their supply chain/ shipping processes disrupted, have recently switched to online sales channels, and are adjusting to changes in their employment structure. All that combined with the holiday season's hecticness, delays and mix-ups are bound to happen at some point. Reminding each other via social media just how much stress everyone is currently under, especially small businesses, is a powerful way you can support small businesses in the upcoming weeks.

4. Share Their GoFundMe Page

Many small businesses now have GoFundMe pages to collect contributions and support staff during these hard times. By sharing these pages on social media, you’ll contribute to getting the word out to your local community.
